FIDs use a hydrogen flame as the means to ionize organic vapors. Once they are ionized, they can be detected and measured. FIDs respond to virtually all organic compounds, compounds that contain carbon-hydrogen or carbon-carbon bonds. FIDs will not respond to inorganic compounds. Inside the detector chamber, the sample is exposed to a hydrogen flame which ionizes the organic vapors.
FIDs are the most sensitive for saturated hydrocarbons (alkanes), unsaturated hydrocarbons (alkenes and alkynes), and aromatic hydrocarbons.

Thermo Scientific TVA-1000BThe TVA-1000B is the only over the shoulder portable vapor analyzer that offers both PID (Photoionization Detection) and FID (Flame Ionization Detection). Users can measure a wide variety of organic vapors over an impressive dynamic range (0-50,000 ppm). The FID operates by breaking hydrogen-carbon bonds and is not limited by the ionization potential of the molecule.
